Classy galloper Worthy Cause has confirmed plans for a bold three-state assault during the spring and summer carnivals with an impressive return at Doomben on Saturday.
Having his first start since the Queensland Derby, Worthy Cause started a $1.90 favourite and proved far too good for a handy field of sprinters, beating Buakaw ($8) by 2-1/4 lengths in the Teece Air Con Hcp (1350m).
Trainer John Zielke said Worthy Cause had earned a shot at the Group Two Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) at Randwick on September 5 with the Hill Stakes and Craven Plate also on his Sydney radar ahead of a trip to Melbourne.
"There he will run in the Mackinnon Stakes at Flemington on October 30 before we come back here for the Magic Millions Stayers Cup at the Gold Coast in January," Zielke said.
"We won't target the Cox Plate this year but maybe next year."
Zielke said Worthy Cause would improve greatly from Saturday's win and he was confident the horse could measure up interstate.
"This is a very good horse," Zielke said.
"He has had three jump-outs but the run will tighten him up. He ran very smart time today and that confirms what I have been saying about him."
Meanwhile, a last-ditch experiment by trainer Tony Gollan helped The Storeman end a frustrating run of minor placings.
Gollan stepped The Storeman up in distance, reintroduced blinkers to his raceday gear and told apprentice Alannah Fancourt to take the $3.10 favourite to the front in the QLD Home Solutions Hcp (1200m).
Despite being attacked for the lead in the middle stages by Jefferson Park, The Storeman was too strong, scoring by a head to Easy Running ($31) with a short half-head to Velrosso ($15) in third.
Gold Coast trainer Mel Leitch celebrated her first Saturday metropolitan winner when Lucky News ($4.10) claimed the Garden City Air Con Hcp (1350m).
Leitch was formerly stable foreperson for top trainer Robert Heathcote and had a stint working in Singapore before returning to Queensland earlier this year.
"I have done my apprenticeship and things are starting to come together. I have 10 horses at the moment but I have been choosy in what I have taken," Leitch said.
