View Full Version : What are QH Bars

Hi there.

I was looking at buying a Western saddle. I have a horse with an VERY high wither. I've noticed that some people include the term QH bars (standard and all different sizes).

What are they? What effect does they have on the fit of a saddle?

Any help would be appreciated.

I must have been a search engine in a previous life ...

Most TBs will never fit a full QH bar saddle. It is just too wide in the gullet, and TBs have more of a wither than QHs do. The 2 breeds have totally different shaped backs.

A semi-QH barred saddle MAY fit your horse, but get your saddle professionally fitted to avoid back soreness and wasting your money on the wrong saddle.

My 17hh TB gelding wouldnt fit a western saddle, so I ended up buying the swinging fender Bates Kimberley Poley Stocky. The saddle has an adjustable gullet and can be restuffed to fit the individual topline. It is so comfy, fits beaut and I am wrapped with it!!

Hey, thanks for all your help guys (and gals).
I love the way everyone is willing to help.

I really appreciate it. I've decided to go for a half-breed fender saddle they are reasonable priced on ebay, (I'm only after a second hand one) and they are quality ones as well - I'm going to steer clear of the cheaper ones.

Thanks again for all you help.

And the funny photo yaers.

Have a great horsey weekend everyone.
