View Full Version : Should reindeer be offered hard feed as well as hay?

My children are particularly concerned that lucerne hay we are putting out for the reindeer is not going to be sufficient and a hard feed for each of them should be left out as well.

What do you think?

We also cannot decide whether or not there are 8 or 9 reindeer. The children are insistent there are 9.

Well, for starters there were 8, but with the addition of Rudolph there are now 9... As for feed, surely a handful of oats each would be nice for them.. :7

Look, I am no expert, however, they will be working very hard, and I really believe they will need a good amount of lucerne and oats to help give them some energy, however I will also be leaving out some lovely sweet biscuits as a treat also, as last time they ate the lot!

I am sure they will be thristy also, so don't forget to leave out some water.

I go with 9 reindeer as well but I don't hink hard feed is a good idea. Reindeer come from a cold, snowy climate (like shetland ponies) so they are VERY prone to foundering (like shetland ponies). I think a carrot is a better, lower calorie option. :P

Merry Christmas

A little of track. My kids brought home "reindeer dust" from school. It was a little bag of mix, just chaff etc (i think it was guinea pig feed) and it had glitter in it. They had to sprinkle it over the lawn for the reindeers. They loved it.

Sure Santa drinks coke - he must be on something to get around to so many kids in the world - besides look at his nose/cheeks :+

I am sure Santa makes sure they are well nourished before their trip.

I wouldn't give them hard feed in the middle of working, that may upset their tummies, and they do have a lot of work to do tonight.

Definitely some clean water and a carrot is a great idea too. What about some apple?

Freckles, you do make me laugh out loud sometimes.

I cant believe you lot sometimes!

EVERYONE knows that reindeer are magic and run on unleaded. geesh.
They do, however like a bit of bourbon. leave that this year instead of all ya flamin carrots.

We had a lovely guy drop in yesterday, he wanted to collect some sheep pellets so he could put them in the back yard as reindeer poo!
Don't actually know what reindeer poo looks like and suspect it's nothing like sheep poo, but I don't suppose his kids will know.
Merry Christmas everybody.
