View Full Version : Why does Bet Selector test backward

Can anyone give me a reason why the program does this?
It seems to me that it would be much better to have it test from the oldest date to the latest date and at least you could then watch how your bank moved up and down.

To be frank I prefer it this way as I'm most interested in what my systems and bank balance are doing now, not what they were doing 1, 2, or 3 years ago and I also keep records on a dayly basis or whenever I bet or use a system....the "stop" button on the system tester gets very regular use and saves time.

But Far C why don't you just test on the recent date(s) that you are interested in?

And while I am whingeing, wouldn't it be good if the program retained the last pair of dates that you tested so they don't have to be re-entered when you want to update all your system results?

Thats OK mate if ya haven't had a couple of beers....

And Mike, I'll gladly whinge along side of you with the re-entering business.

I wonder mate how many Forumites would be interested in submitting their TOP ONLY selection every Saturday for a given period of time and at the end of that time the top 2, 3 or 4 SELECTORS (or whatever)
as determined by S/R and POT selected for the forum and what the forum did with the selections was up to the individuals, everything would need to work on honesty....could even go further, Bet Selector members only....what do ya reakon mate, too complicated !!!!

Opinions, opinions, opinions.

Cheers mate

Like FC I prefer the most recent data at the beginning. For no other reason than the old memory box needs jogging as you get older. It helps me relate to current horses, their form and runs. May even give an idea for this system as I can still recall something from the race. Far better to see current data first as I'm about to nod off at the end of long listing.

I would like to see the summary table at the beginning, now that would be helpful.
I would like to see WinSR/sel PlaceSR/sel and AveWinPrice included in the summary table rather the RaceSR's. I can see space is limited in the system test panel so the natural instinct is to include the RaceSR because also covers exotics. I doubt that too many are interested in the RaceSR but are looking for WinSR/sel.

I'm not asking for the data to presented in the reverse order just for the program to do its calculating from first date to last date.

But Neale, what I would really really like is for the summary to be presented all in one table like this...

SYSTEM SELECTOR RULES SET FOR: DARKIES KISS IV

I have seen talk of Log files but I don't know how they work yet or if they already have this facility but it sure would save a lot of cutting and pasting?

I was thinking along similar lines but had to cut short as I had to rush off and mind 6 youngsters for a couple of hours.

Would be great to get it all together at the top of the page so you dont have to pan down all the time.

Would make it a breeze to transfer to a file or for forum postings.

I THINK that the reason for this was that the System Selector was not originally designed to backtest systems, it was designed to help filter selections for FUTURE races. But some brightspark realized that it could also be used to backtest ideas by selecting previous dates, and so the System Selector became a system testing module. Since it was originally designed to go forward from today's meetings to tomorrow's, etc, when you run it backwards it makes sense to start from today's meetings and go backwards, no?

But now that you mention it, it may be possible for Neale to give us the option of testing in either direction?

Ask And Ye Shall Receive -- well, sometimes, anyway! :-)

Neale happened to mention in passing recently that he was looking at an option to do just this, to make it easier for us to publish results summaries on this forum, but it is not quite as easy as it sounds. As you all probably know by now, there is a formatting problem when you post summaries to this forum, and those of you who use more than one web browser like me may have noticed that even the <pre> command works fine in Explorer, but not at all in the Mozilla browsers, so it may take a while to produce a Summary Report, or whatever Neale decides to call it. But it is in the pipeline.

The log files are basically just a scratch pad. Like you, I haven't found much use for them yet either, but like everything else, I guess it is better to have and not need than to need....... :-)

Bye for now,

Mike,

I'm with you ... I would love to see the option of retaining the previous date ranges for back testing.

It drives me nuts having to scroll through the dates to repeat the same time frame over and over again.

Another item for the "Wish List".

Poor Neale :) he must get bombarded from all directions!!!
