Why do people put goldfish (comets) into horse water trough

I moved to a new agistment nearly 2 months ago. The main source of water is dam water. I noticed some agisters have put goldfish (comets) into the trough. I wondered for what reason. I like the idea but I think my little chestnut would carry on and not drink from it as the goldfish (shark) may get him. Cyberhorse is always best place to put these questions. Why not so many people post now a days I still noticed when I logged on that over 200 people were watching.

Squawker is correct. My understanding also is that it can help to keep the water from stagnating, and can help keep green weed growth under control.

Thanks everyone. Well done cybergirl. Only problem I have noticed since I left that notice that in the row my horse's paddock is in. There were 2 troughs with goldfish and now there are none. The birds have other ideas.

So do owls. Friend had to put fine mesh over their fish pond before the owls cleaned them out.
