My first mare was a twin, was a runt pony TB lol

If you were in the north island the reason for the skinny horses is that they had a BAD drought over summer and then had no hay to cut, and no grass etc so the dumb dumbs pretty much starved their horses out of ignorance and no money as they NEVER have to feed out as it is usually lush as dairy land and of course the further into winter the more food cost so the less they got and so on

I was up there in june and their winter grass is like our lush summer growth in the south island so I don't know what they are complaining about, they just are not used to feeding out AT ALL

also lots of SI had bad drought as well, not where I was except we only got about a half amount of hay off our paddock this year

They are VERY cute! Poor mum is going to have the life drained out of her feeding two babies!

I would like to mention though, for everyone's benefit, that twinning is very risky in horses with a lot of mares suffering complications. They can miscarry (as you've already experienced), one of the twins can die in the womb and the mare can get seriously ill with septicaemia (blood poisoning) among other problems associated with carrying twins.

Also, Mindari, I don't know what your post-natal procedures are but just because you found only one placenta doesn't mean she only had one placenta.

Retained placentas are one of the problems associated with twin births and I would have her "flushed" as soon as possible to get any bits out (if you haven't already) before her uterus gets infected and your mare becomes sick/dies/becomes infertile due to infection. You may need to give her meds as well if she has had the placenta in there for a long period of time. In short, call a vet who specialises in breeding practices to come out and do a thorough examination of your mare.

I could be wrong, there may only have been one placenta, but it's better to be on the safe side than lose your mare and struggle to find a foster mare for TWO foals!

Oh my gosh!
I'm not wearing my glasses, I really had to look hard to see two sets of legs, bodies etc. I thought it was a siamese twin. Thought you were pulling our legs there for a moment.

well up till yesterday afternoon all was well, they were even feeling so strong both were cantering and bucking, then that night aenita wasnt looking happy but no idea what was wrong, this morning it had degenerated to colic so today has been a bit of a nightmare, aenika the one in the photo nursing is still full of beans and nursing well.

aenita was nursing but the cramps kept stopping her, finally seen by the vet, she has gas colic, she is a lousy drinker looks like she is sucking half milk half air, she's had some pain relief and mums currently having a hiding milkbar wise. and still sucking as much air as milk by the racket shes making.

she is not out of the woods by a long shot so can only hope.

she is offical 17.6 kg didnt weigh aenika but probably 18 kg

I actually never expected their mum to have either a live or normal foal.
my only wish was she would survive the birth of whatever she was carrying.

because she was served, then 24 hours later both she and aeniad began the hacking EI cough.

since it was stated high tempretaturs was consistant with EI I knew high tempretature could wreak havoc with any developing embroyo


twinning wasnt one of the possible scenarios i thought of. as for the other girl we bred in march how on earth she concieved twins too is just more to add to the mystery.
